  • Integral use of sorghum for ethanol production in Mexico is a good alternative to crops like maize and sugarcane.

  • Opportunities for improvements are detailed for the use of grain, juice and biomass sorghums in bio-refineries.

  • Novel processing technologies for ethanol from grain sorghum with yields similar to maize are described.

  • The use of sweet sorghum instead of sugarcane for ethanol is advantageous for Mexico due to its shorter cycle and drought resistance.

  • Biomass and sorghum bagasse have an adequate fiber composition that after chemical and enzymatic hydrolyses potentially yield a good fuel-ethanol production.
